Its been 17 years to the day, many still miss him, but his music and his legend lives on. This is an original sketch from charcoal on an old antique window from a farmhouse that was torn down somewhere in South Elgin! Leaving us with his music, he gave us a gift. “The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.” From one of his favorite movies.. can anyone guess?
I remember where I was when I heard the news, I can’t imagine the feeling of those that were close to this powerful, enchanting musician. Stevie lived for his music, that is clear through each and every song he laid down!
Favorite songs of mine that don’t get enough air play are: Hug you, Squeeze You and Close to You, Stevies vocals on Close to You make you feel as if he was talking to you! Hug You Squeeze You has such emotion in it, when you watch the video, you can see his passion rising from deep with in the depths of his soul, and they climb high out of his physical body and encompass the masses!
Update - 11/13.07 - Is it a blogging success story? I think so, I could not figure out why I was getting so many hits on the blog for Stevie Ray Vaughan, oh, yeah, I knew I had pictures of him on there that I had drawn and/or painted. I had done a search for Stevie Ray Vaughan on google, well thousands upon thousands of pages, no doubt he is a guitar legend and a gentle soul that we lost to soon. Well, low and behold, my little old charcoal drawing has ended up on page 3 of the google image search. I belive that to be quite an accomplishment with over 95,000 pictures that come up in the search.
It just shows that if you keep it up, you will come up !

I awoke in a hotel in Korea one early Fall morning. To keep in touch with home I switched on CNN. The screen began to glow and I recognized that all-too-familiar scene, a newsperson with a celebrity’s image over his shoulder. It could mean only on thing … SRV was gone. I sat in shock, recalling how I had seen him live three times, and how full of life he always was.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget that scene. I know I’ll always have those great memories that he created: the live shows, the concert videos, Double Trouble featuring Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, the truly amazing guitarwork, the raw emotion, and so much more.

I never had the chance to listen to his music but I know for a fact it has to be good. Even to this day you hear his music on the radio.

While I really enjoy his guitar playing, I really dislike the effect of his legacy on guitar playing. There are far too many “Vaughan-a-bees” trying to play ‘blues’ just like him and coming up short. This has left blues stagnant ever since his tragic death.

Frank, I do agree with you on the wanna-be’s, there never will be another SRV, as he knew, there would never be another Hendrix or Howlin’ Wolf, but he took their style and he created his own. I am waiting for the next true great blues artist to surface, it seems to go on 20 year cycle. Thanks for stopping by!

I lived in Austin for 17 years and I feel lucky to have gotten to see him live at the Aqua festival.
I did not know him, but some of my friends had known him for years - they all described him as a kind and loving person, not just a greatly talented musician.

I am sorry it took me so long - this was done on an antique window that I frosted with spray paint and the remainder of the piece was done in charcoal.

The man was one of a kind and nobody can fill his shoes. If you never got to see him live, you really missed something that words just can’t do justice for. He created a sound with his voice and guitar that can never be duplicated.
